What else is there to see on the Red Square? Right in front of the St. Basil Cathedral there is the most famous monument of the whole Russia: Minin and Pozharskiy. The picture of this monument is in every history textbook, in every touristic booklet, in every photo-book of Moscow. In addition to being historically and esthetically significant, it is also the first sculptural monument ever placed in Moscow. The monument was created in 1818 with the fund raised by general population. Who are actually Minin and Pozharskiy?

Kuzma Minin was a petty bourgois who lived in Nizhny Novgorod and Dmitri Pozharskiy was a military general and a duke from Moscow. In early 17th century the combined efforts of this two men succeeded in creating the militia to fight against Polish intervention. That was an initiative that changed the situation towards more favourable for Russia and eventually lead to defeating the enemy.

Several years ago Moscow had presented Nizhny Novgorod a smaller copy of the monument, as Minin was a citizen of Nizhny Novgorod.
