Though rarely anyone speaks up about this delicate matter, but our physiology has its demands regardless of how beautiful the scenery is around us. WC is not a luxury, but a need if you spend 12 hours sightseeing. In Madrid I had several unpleasant moments because of I could not find those facilities. It was not that they were none-existent, rather we did not know what to look for. It might be obvious for a native Spanish person, but for someone from different culture might simple not recognize WCs even seeing it for nth time. It might be funny now, but it was painful then.

So I will take care that you know what to look for in Moscow once the need arises. Public WCs in Moscow are to be found easily as long as you know what to look for. The most common facility is a bio-WC which looks like a blue or green plastic cabins with easy to understand signs. They are to be found by the Metro stations, next to the big pedestrian crossing routes, train stations. Price to this facility is 10-20 rubles to be paid to a service person who usually sits next to the toilet and is responsible for the cleanness. I would rate these WCs with only 1 star: these toilets usually lack water and toilet paper is also rarely available there.

1 star toilet in Moscow

Two stars could be given to the facilities with running water and with paper. Surprisingly, you can find this quality also.

2 star Toilet in Moscow

Here other toilets available in public places: museums, cinemas, train stations. They can be used also for a fee. Toilets in cafes and restaurants are normally reserves only for the visitors. McDonalds’ toilets can be used even if you do not order anything there and they are free of charge.

Note that there are no toilets in Metro, only biotoilets next to the entry into the Metro stations. At night WCs are usually closed [tant pis for you].
